What we mean by decking
The bit beneath the surface.
Decking lives or dies on the sub-frame. Most failed decks didn't fail on the surface - they failed on joist spacings, bearer support and ventilation that were quietly cut to save a day.
Sub-frames built to spec
Joists at the right centres for the board, bearers supported off independent posts where the ground demands it, full ventilation beneath every panel.
Material chosen for use
Hardwood for warmth and grain, composite for low maintenance and stability - each with trade-offs we'll explain rather than gloss over.
Detailed properly
Hidden fixings where the deck will be looked at; recessed LED runs laid in at sub-frame stage; integrated planters and step nosings finished cleanly.
Why this works in Camberley
Locally tuned, not location-swapped.
Most Camberley decking projects sit on family plots where the brief is a raised dining area off a kitchen extension or a level platform that brings a sloping lawn into use. The boring decisions - sub-frame, ventilation, joist centres - are what decide whether the deck lasts.
Plenty of Camberley gardens sit on heavy clay, particularly the older estates south of the A30. We plan drainage and sub-bases accordingly, especially on patios and garden room foundations off Frimley Road and around Watchetts.
- Clay & winter wet - Patios laid without proper falls hold standing water; lawns get waterlogged. We grade levels away from the house and detail drainage before the visible work starts.
- Compacted ground on newer estates - Builder's compaction is a real cause of dying lawns and patio failure. We lift the top section, cultivate or import soil, and rebuild sub-bases properly.
- Mature trees & roots - Heatherside and Crawley Ridge plots often have substantial pines and oaks. We design around root zones rather than against them, with hand-dug foundations where it matters.
- Aspect & sun - A lot of the older estates have north-facing rears. We plan terrace placement, planting and outdoor-room glazing to get the most of the sun a garden actually gets, not the sun a brochure assumes.

Heatherside · GU15
Raised hardwood deck off a kitchen extension.
A Heatherside family wanted a deck large enough for dining off an extension that finished a metre above lawn level. Hardwood balau on a fully ventilated treated sub-frame, integrated step lights and planters built into the perimeter.

Common questions
What Camberley clients usually ask about decking.
Will composite or hardwood suit our garden better?+
Depends on aspect and appetite for upkeep. We talk through both options on the first visit, against the actual conditions of the garden rather than from a brochure.
How long does a decking project take?+
Most decks run one to two weeks on site. Raised platforms with retaining or integrated lighting can stretch to three.
Will the deck last on damp ground?+
Yes - when the sub-frame is detailed for it. We lift the deck off the ground on adjustable supports, ventilate the perimeter and use ground-suitable joist material. Most failures we're called to fix come from sub-frames that weren't.
Can you build over an existing patio or concrete?+
Often, yes - adjustable supports let us level a new deck over old paving without a full break-out. We assess the slab condition first.
