What we mean by turfing & artificial grass
The bit beneath the surface.
A turfed lawn lives or dies on what's beneath it. Roll cultivar turf onto unprepared builder's ground and you'll have a yellow lawn within a year. Spend an extra two days on soil prep and you'll have a lawn that holds up to dogs, children and August.
Soil prep first, turf second
Old turf or compacted ground lifted, soil cultivated or imported to 150mm, levelled and rolled - the boring work that decides the rest.
Cultivar matched to the garden
Hard-wearing rye blends for family lawns; finer fescue mixes for shaded or low-traffic plots. Specified to the conditions, not the brochure.
Laid properly, watered properly
Joints staggered, edges trimmed clean, watered in thoroughly with clear care notes for the first six weeks.
Why this works in Reading
Locally tuned, not location-swapped.
Reading turfing & artificial grass projects share a pattern. The houses are well-loved, the kitchens have usually been extended, and the garden is the part that's been waiting its turn.
Older Reading suburbs often have long, narrow gardens with original boundary walls. We design with the proportions in mind - wider terraces close to the house, planted zones, and a quiet end-of-garden destination.
- Long narrow proportions - Zoned layouts with planting screens make a long garden feel larger and more interesting than a single open run.
- Limited rear access - Barrowed materials, careful route protection through the house when needed, and a tidy site throughout.
- Mixed Victorian boundary walls - Protected during dig, repaired where they need it; the existing fabric is usually worth keeping.

Common questions
What Reading clients usually ask about turfing & artificial grass.
What about our shaded garden under mature trees?+
Shaded plots want a finer fescue-heavy mix and realistic expectations - no lawn thrives in heavy shade. We'll talk through whether turf, a different ground cover or a planted scheme is the right move.
Will you handle drainage and levels as part of the lawn?+
Yes - re-graded falls, soakaways and French drains where the plot needs them are all part of the turfing quote. A lawn on poorly drained ground will never thrive.
Why does new turf yellow off after a few months?+
Almost always poor ground prep. Turf rolled onto compacted builder's ground or thin topsoil can't root properly and will yellow within a season. The fix is to lift it, cultivate or import 150mm of soil and re-lay onto something the roots can actually grow into.
How long does a turfed lawn take?+
Most jobs run two to four days - one to two days of soil prep, one day laying, half a day final levels and edging. Larger lawns scale linearly.
